What do Park Place, Boardwalk, and the occasional Chance all have in common? Monopoly of course! Today is National Play Monopoly Day, and if you’re anything like my family, the board game was a staple at holiday get-togethers and on any vacation. There’s more to Monopoly than just the nostalgic feeling we experience every time we play; board games are also an essential part to our health, and offer several learning opportunities.

Monopoly is an American-originated board game—first published in 1935 by the Parker Brothers—now produced by game and toy company Hasbro. While there are many spinoffs of the game, the original will always be a crowd favorite.

While there are many other lessons Monopoly can teach you, one of the most important is to take risks. Life is too short for you not to take a chance on something—don’t be shy, put a hotel on Park Place and call it a day!
